The Good Grains team lucky enough to work right alongside Organic Milling (OM), a cereal manufacturer producing the very best since 1960. We work so close with them in fact, that our office is located at their manufacturing plant. That's right, we get to smell all the cereal greatness every single day! We went ahead and sat down with Lupe Martinez, OM's Vice President of R&D and Innovation to get the scoop on how our cereal, granola, and oatmeal products are made.
1. Ingredients
Many of our ingredients are sourced domestically, as we use wheat and corn products frequently from the Midwestern region. Occasionally, ingredients are selected from international producers. While we cannot claim 100% domestic ingredients, Lupe’s team is proactive and selective for 100% quality ingredients. Organic Milling products are USDA Organic, QAI Certified, Orthodox Union Kosher, and use 100% Recycled Paper. Read more of our certifications here!
2. Recipe Building
Organic Milling’s R&D staff produces, tests, and tastes a variety of recipe options before becoming a certified recipe to be sent into mass production. Some of this comes from flavor requests, but many recipes come from experience and creativity of our Organic Milling R&D Staff!
3. Processing
Organic Milling cereal production begins with the dumping station, in which all of the ingredients are dumped into machinery for production and cooking. The cereals travel through different machinery for baking, sugar coating, and flavoring until the product is finished.
4. Inspection
All cereals go through various bags and processes for inspection to assure the product is quality. They are inspected for defects and taste tested by a team of professional food critics in black tuxes. Okay, that’s a lie. We don’t have food critics in tuxes in our warehouse. But we do have taste testers that are very good at their job!
5. Packing
After pushing through a variety of large and small bags of mass production, cereal is then packed into our Good Grains bags. They are inspected for proper packaging, and then all Good Grains bags are boxed into larger shipments and sent to our fulfillment center.
6. Distribution
Our team, led by Praise, our Production Manager, hand-packages each Good Grains order with specified cereal, keeper cards, buttons, and other seasonal goodies! Our fulfillment center is only a 10 minute drive from our office in San Dimas and orders are packaged daily and mailed through FedEx, UPS, and USPS depending on the order destination.
